Helping kids and families in Miami-Dade

We offer something few of our kids and families have known: hope.

You may already know us for McLamore Children's Center. See what else we do ...

Too many children in our community understand just one thing: fear. They've suffered the brutalities of abuse, the Children's Home Society of Florida helps kids heal from their painpain of neglect. They've been let down time and time again. They've lost any sense of belonging. They don't know how to trust.

And then they're rescued from their living nightmares. Finally, there's a glimmer of light. There's Children's Home Society of Florida.

Hundreds of kids and teens come to us every year, hurt and confused by the past yet fearful and uncertain about the future. They rely on us for safety, healing, comfort and guidance.

Some children come to us in the middle of the night with only the pajamas they were wearing. Many times, we welcome these children into our McLamore Children's Center, our emergency shelter for young victims of abuse and neglect. Siblings who can't safely live at home often join our "family" at McLamore Children's Center so brothers and sisters can stay together. Sometimes children stay at McLamore Children's Center for just one night until they can join a loving foster family.  Other times, they may stay a bit longer until a more permanent home is found.

Hundreds of local children also find acceptance and love with local foster families that have opened their homes to kids and teens in need.

We also have special foster families who care for children affected by HIV or AIDS. Through Project SMILE (Special Mission in a Loving Environment), these kids receive more than love and security they also receive continuous care, counseling and medical attention.

Residential Group Homes

For some severely traumatized kids and teens, traditional foster care isn't enough. They need more attention. More counseling. More support.

They find it in our Residential Group Homes. Welcomed into a "family," youth are nurtured by caring staff members who understand how to help them through their journeys of healing. Our group homes offer the comfort, counseling and security kids and teens have longed for.

What happens next?

While we care for kids, we also work with their parents to overcome challenges that once threatened the children's safety. During this time, families learn to rebuild broken trust and bonds at our supervised Family Visitation Centers. In a warm environment, moms and dads learn how to practice positive parenting, and family connections begin to strengthen.

Through counseling, parenting groups and services in the home, families become strong and stable. And, often, kids can safely return home.

Forever families

But sometimes, families are unable to overcome challenges that threaten their kids' safety. When this happens, our adoption team finds loving families eager to welcome our kids into their hearts and homes forever.

Starting fresh: Helping families raise safe, healthy kids

Expecting a baby can be really overwhelming! Especially if you were raised in an abusive home. Or if you're in a Children's Home Society of Florida helps moms raise safe, healthy babiesviolent relationship. Or battling an addiction.

So we offer Healthy Start and HealthConnect Home-Visitation Program of The Children's Trust services to help pregnant women stay healthy and prepare for motherhood. We educate them on proper pre-natal care. We help them create a safe, nurturing home for their babies. We guide them through uncertain times and teach them how to manage the stress and demands of raising a child.

For families struggling with the stress and responsibilities of raising babies and toddlers, we offer our Healthy Families program. Dedicated professionals coach moms and dads through trying times and teach positive parenting, healthy ways to handle stress and more.

Additionally, our Special Needs Child Care Center offers a safe, nurturing, educational place for children to attend preschool. Our child care center serves children in foster care and children throughout the community whose parents find peace of mind knowing their children are in our care.

Our goal: to prevent abuse and neglect for more innocent kids, to break the vicious cycle in more Miami-Dade families.
